USPTO AI/ET Partnership Series #3

Dr. Clark was part of a panel of literacy advocates and innovators, including British A. Robinson, CEO of the Barbara Bush Foundation, and Denine Torr, VP of Corporate Social Responsibility & Philanthropy at Dollar General and Executive Director of Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Together, they talked about the scope of America’s literacy crisis – 43 million U.S. adults reading below a 3rd-grade reading level, and how educational technologies like games, VR and AI can help empower our communities.

The panel mentioned Codex: Lost Words of Atlantis, which was developed under the leadership of Dr. Clark as part of a collaboration between SMU Guildhall, SMU Simmons, and Literacy Instruction for Texas (LIFT).  Codex is a puzzle game that won the XPrize for Adult Literacy for achieving the best increase for English language learners among all competitors. The development of the app and the data gathered through this process is only the first step that will allow us to start building machine learning techniques to personalize learning experiences for adult learners, accounting for diverse backgrounds and knowledge gaps.

BALANCED CTO, Corey Clark, PhD, will be a highlighted guest at the Retina Foundation’s Virtual Fireside Chat event featuring special guest speaker Dr. Anthony Fauci. The event, titled Up Close and Personal with Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, will take place on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. CST.  The event, which focuses on what can be accomplished through cooperative partnerships between industry and public institutions, will feature a segment where Dr. Clark will speak about collaborations he has coordinated between public-private partnerships to improve health science research. These include highlighting BALANCED’s partnership with the Retina Foundation where, using Eye in the Sky: Defender, a game utilizing HEWMEN technology, we were able to significantly improve the effectiveness of machine learning algorithms used in a variety of computer vision applications, such the automation of interpreting Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) tomography to improve scans used in the diagnosis and treatment of Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Video games are the largest entertainment industry in the world, generating more revenue than the music and movie industries combined. The interactivity and engagement created by video games provides a new way to harness the creativity and ingenuity of humans through entertainment. This talk will show how the Human and Machine Intelligence (HuMIn) Game Lab at SMU is using video games to change everything from education, analysis of retinal images to new innovative human-in-loop collaborative machine learning methodologies.

Dr. Clark serves as Deputy Director of Research at SMU Guildhall, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at SMU, as well as CTO of BALANCED Media | Technology. He has over 15 years of experience with a background in finding solutions to large-scale problems by combining several areas of study, such as gaming, systems biology, distributed computing, and artificial intelligence/machine learning. He has raised over $20 million in research, seed, and series funding from government and private entities as well as served as CTO of a gaming technology startup that was acquired. He has overseen multiple Advanced DoD R&D projects from concept to commercialization and most recently led a team to a $2.5 million XPRIZE Grand Prize win. Dr. Clark’s innovations in human-in-the-loop machine learning techniques have led to numerous publications, patents and invitations to speak at top conferences around the world.
